Big Idea = Despite Jacob's spiritual dullness, God grows Jacob numerically, materially, and spiritually during 20 years of oppression. 5 Examples of God's Grace to Jacob: 1) Providentially bringing Jacob to his mother's family - 29:1-14 2) Sovereignly providing Jacob with two wives - 29:15-30 3) Giving Jacob twelve children despite the sinfulness of the family - 29:31-30:24 4) Sovereignly increasing Jacob's flocks despite Laban's dishonesty - 30:25-43 5) Protecting Jacob as he flees Laban - 31:1-55 So what do we learn about God from observing Jacob's life?
1st, we are reminded that God is all-powerful. God is sovereign in our lives as well. Every circumstance – good or bad – that we face is because God has ordained it for our good and His glory. 2nd - God keeps His Word. Believer, God has promised to never leave you or forsake you. When others mistreat you, when you find yourself in the midst of conflict, when you deal with disappointment, when it seems that you are going through trials alone, remember that God is there! He is faithfully and powerfully carrying out His plans for You. And because He is your Father – His plans for You are good and wise. 3rd – God is gracious. O Christians, I trust that seeing God's dealings with Jacob reminds you about how gracious God is! He does not treat us as our sins deserve. He is committed to our spiritual growth. God has promised to faithfully complete the process of transforming us to be like Christ. He patiently strives with us even as we are slow to learn. He disciplines us when we disobey, but His discipline is loving and redemptive. We will never face His wrath.
