Cain and Abel were offering sacrifices on behalf of themselves; sacrifices which they hoped would find favor with God in relation to their worship of Him. What can we learn from this? We should learn that these sons of Adam and Eve were not priests when they offered their sacrifices, but they were men who had been taught to worship God acceptably from their father Adam. A priest is one who offers a sacrifice on behalf of others. These first two sons of Adam offered sacrifices to God on their own behalf, based on what God had given them to do; their occupations, for which they both were thankful and so they accordingly offered their sacrifices in worship to God.
