The writer begins by talking about how Christ is greater than angels. He is turning his guns on the conventional wisdom right at the beginning of his letter. He says something like this: "You might think, first-century Christian, that a good deal of what we know about God has been transmitted to us through the mediation of angels, and that angels are definitely and undoubtedly superior to human beings in God's plan and economy of redemption. Well, have I got news for you!"
As we'll see, his argument is first of all that Jesus is superior to the angels, a truth backed up by seven quotations from Scripture. But then, as we'll see in a few weeks' time, he takes it to the next level, grouping us men with Christ as the ones who have dominion over everything, and making angels subject to Christ and thus to us as well. The argument is stunning. In one amazing arc it moves from the supremacy of Christ as Son of God to the supremacy of Christ as Son of Adam, and us as sons of Adam in Him. Angels may be greater in might and power than you, but in the celestial hierarchy, they serve human beings and not the other way around. That's a pretty incredible payoff. And though you may not have given much thought to the angels recently, it probably hasn't even crossed your mind to think that we shall judge angels, and not vice versa.
Well, we'll get there. For now let me remind you that the main point of this passage is that Jesus is better in name and position than all the angels put together, and that the OT Scriptures already testified abundantly to this truth.
