J. B. Phillips's paraphrased translation of the NT often takes too much liberty. Yet at times, his translation can offer a fresh insight into the true force and sentiment of the text. On vv. 1, 3, he wrote: "O you dear idiots of Galatia… surely you can't be so idiotic?" The New English Bible put it like this, "You stupid Galatians!…Can it be that you are so stupid?" I. None of us will fall into this specific error in Galatia (I suspect) but we can fall into a version of this doctrinal error: beginning by the Spirit but being perfected by the flesh! When circumstances go badly. • 4. When we think "justification by faith" is not enough. II. No Christian is immune from falling into this foolishness (stupid idiotic error). III. The importance of v. 1 — Christ's death on the cross did everything for me!!!!
