Daniel as a man of God, taking God at His word, applied himself to intense prayer in light of the the Word of God given to Jeremiah. Jeremiah had been told the judgment Israel was to come under for disobedience to God's command to give the land a sabbath year of rest every seventh year for four hundred and ninety years would result in their being held in captivity out of the land for the seventy sabbath years they had disregarded. Daniel knowing the time was nearing for the seventy years to be completed prayed to God for restoration back to their land, as the nation had been told to do. Daniel prayed in humble confession of the sins of his people and for God to honor His name among the pagan nations by restoring His people to their homeland. God using another nation to punish the sins of His people does not excuse the sins of the nation God uses. Babylon was brought under their own judgment when overthrown by the Medes and Persians who are in their first year of reigning at the time of Daniel’s prayer. God answered Daniel’s prayer of restoration and gave him a prophecy of four hundred and ninety years into Israel’s future.
