God disciplines those He loves. That is a truth we need to ponder and let sink in. We are very forgetful why it is we have so many trials and troubles in this life. It is for discipline. God is disciplining us for our good. And as the text shows, that discipline often comes in a surprising form -- hostility from sinners. We may be tempted to think that sinful hostility from sinners couldn't possibly be discipline from God, but it is. And until we recognize that, we will never receive it as such and we will always be struggling against the rod, as we try to escape that hostility.
