The fruit of the Spirit is love. The love of God manifests itself in three distinct ways in the life of a believer. First, he loves God by way of delight. God is His treasure and portion. Above all things, he wants God. This is the foundation of true love, because God is love and this is what love meant before the foundation of the world. God didn't begin to love when He made Adam. Love is the delight that the persons of the Trinity have with one another. Secondly, the believer loves other believers by way of delight. Since he loves God, he naturally and logically loves those who are born of God and who are being conformed to the image of Christ. Thirdly, he loves his neighbor as himself, and his enemies by way of benevolence. He does not love the unbeliever by way of delight, because God doesn't, and he cannot rise higher than God. The love he has is the love God has given him through the Spirit. This is how God can love unbelievers (by way of benevolence) and hate them (not taking pleasure in them) at the same time. And this is the reason that believers will simultaneously love and hate unbelievers. They love them by way of benevolence and kindness. But they take no pleasure in them. There's no need to feel guilty about the fact that you don't like being around unbelievers. God doesn't like them either. But He is kind to them.
