When people live for themselves and not for God, destruction comes. In this passage, not only were the Benjamites guilty of sin, but all Israel who had not been following the Lord. We cannot pick and choose what moves us morally. We cannot just look at some sins, but all sins. Only God is righteous, everyone else has a sin problem and needs a Savior. When the Levite recounted his testimony, he left out what he had done wrong. Human nature is that we leave out what would condemn us. Even though it is wired into us that family relationships mean a lot and we might think that 'blood is thicker than water', we must be careful not to have a distorted view of reality. We need to be careful to realize that the wrong that our family and friends do, is still wrong. Governments are to protect their citizens. People are in favor of doing the right thing, until it costs them. We sometimes think that if we are called to do something uncomfortable, it is not really from God. Why is there so much death, sickness, and sorrow. It is because God declared to Adam and Eve that on the day they eat of the fruit that was forbidden they would die. God chooses to use people to do His will who do not deserve His mercy or grace. When we think that we are righteous apart from Christ, we are deceiving ourselves.
