In this lesson, we look at making decisions through the lens of God's law, which means we are talking about the sphere of morality: right and wrong. When faced with a moral decision, our default question should be: what does God's Word say?
The Law Model for making decisions assumes two things: 1) God's right to govern us as the Creator and Lawgiver; 2) God's law and governance are perfect. Because he is a perfect God whose laws are good, the law of God is a blessing to all people. First, God's law is a blessing because it puts us in our place—the law reminds us we are creatures in need of instruction. Second, His law protects, safeguards, and keeps us from sin. Third, It gives us rich and specific directives on how to conduct our lives. Finally, It reveals the character of God.
If God's law is a blessing, why do we not obey it? In a word, sin. We hate God and His law. That sinful hatred is expressed in many ways, especially disobedience. But unbelief and disobedience have consequences. As Greg Uttinger wrote, "When we start disobeying God, we stop seeing clearly the will of God. Our unbelief and disobedience cloud our thinking."
To make godly decisions, we must recognize that the Christian life is a life of warfare. We must be on guard against Satan's deceits, especially when it comes to his lies regarding the Word of God. |
