How will God determine everyone's fate in eternity? Is He like Santa Claus, with a list of who has been naughty and nice? The Bible tells us that we are all on the naughty list, so there is no hope there. Does God have an elaborate record-keeping system in heaven? Yes, He does! Revelation 20:12 tells us that "the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds." God will judge everyone by the same standard, and He will judge righteously, proportionally, and impartially. That is a terrifying prospect! But, praise God, there is a way to settle out of court. Jesus said that when we are on the way to appear before the magistrate, make an effort to settle (Luke 12:58). We have nothing to negotiate with, but Jesus Himself is our Advocate, and if we surrender to Him, He promises that we will not come into judgment but have already "passed out of death into life" (John 5:24).
