Many people, maybe most people, would look at the list of sins that the apostle Paul identifies in chapter 1 – immorality, homosexuality, murder, hatred of God, etc. – and think that they look quite good in comparison. Because they do not sin in those ways outwardly and obviously, and others think of them as decent and upright, many moral people assume they are "good enough" to merit heaven.
Paul knows that man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7) so he helps those who think of themselves as outwardly righteous understand that they who look down on others are accountable to God because their judgment of others confirms that they know the Lord's standards, and they commit the same sins inwardly if not explicitly. Although it appears that God is ignoring sin, in reality His kindness is intended to bring everyone to repentance and faith – even moral people.
