We are grateful for another opportunity to come to the Lord's Supper. As we prepare our hearts to come to the Supper, I want to open up a theme in which we see how God's purpose in redeeming us was accomplished. The text is extremely clear, but the subject it reveals has been quite controversial nonetheless. I am referring to the fact that the Lord Jesus Christ was made a curse on behalf of His people. That is, He came under the curse of God. This would be a strange idea in the minds of so many Christians in our day. They have little understanding of God cursing His Son; abandoning His Son; or pouring out His wrath on His Son. But that is the nature of substitutionary atonement! In this sermon I will develop the theme from the very words of the apostle Paul, beginning with the ruin of man; progressing to the curse of the law of God; and concluding with the subsequent redemption of God. The apostle declares emphatically that our deliverance from the curse of the law occurred only because Christ Himself was made a curse for us. I explain the benefits of that great work in the sermon's conclusion, including both unbelievers and believers.
