As a Jew, Paul could write elaborating on what it was like to live under the Law, desperately trying to keep it, failing to do so perfectly, and then coming to realize that faith in Jesus Christ was the means provided by God to find the sweet release and relief from the burden of the obligation and freedom from the power of indwelling sin. Understanding the point of this section of his epistle comes as chapter 7 is not studied in isolation from its context in following what had been said in the preceding chapter 6, as has been broken down in the New Testament today. Sanctification of the believer is possible by the power of the Holy Spirit and freedom from sin provided by faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Sanctification will result in the life of the genuine believer because the provision has been made possible by God in the salvation provided.
