It is the gospel—who Jesus is, what He has done, and why that matters—the one message that God has entrusted to the church that can provide eternal help for people. The spread of the gospel is our major mission because it alone can meet the greatest need of men and women—which is not more money, or physical health, or a good job, or sexual health, or to be released from the addiction to drugs or booze or pornography. As important as all of those things are, none of them are of ultimate importance.
What is of the utmost importance for every person everywhere in the world is to be reconciled to God; to have their sins forgiven; to be born again by God's Spirit; and to come to know Jesus Christ as Lord. That is the greatest need that every person has—no matter what your situation is or how pressing your practical challenges, your greatest need is to be reconciled to your God. And the only way that you can experience that is by believing the gospel.
Therefore, the greatest good that we can ever do for anyone is to teach them gospel and persuade them to believe it!
The Apostle Paul understood and believed that. That is why when he writes a letter to the church in Rome he focuses on the grace of God in the gospel.
We will see this as we continue to work our way through the introduction of the letter. The gospel was at the center of Paul's own sense of identity and as a result, it shaped the way that he related to people.
