Jesus, in His Plain Talk, calls us to 'radical love'! We are to 'love our enemies!' Now, the command to love one's enemies is NOT new, for throughout the Old Testament, the Israelites were commanded to love their personal enemies. God does not have a double-standard, but only one law that applied equally to the Israelite and the foreigner living among them. They were to love their neighbor as they love themselves, and that neighbor included any alien living among them. But the Pharisees and religious leaders of Jesus' day had narrowed the definite of 'neighbor' to only fellow Israelites and had added to the Scriptures, based on logic, that they were to 'hate their enemies'. So, Jesus' command to love one's enemy was indeed radical teaching in His day. But what about the commands in the Old Testament for Israel to wipe out their enemies? And what about the 'imprecatory' Psalms in which David and others pray for God to curse their enemies? How is this 'loving one's enemies'? This sermon seeks to answer these question and more as we delve into what Jesus meant by loving one's enemies! It's RADICAL LOVE.
