We are grateful for another opportunity to come to the Lord's Table. As we prepare our hearts to come to the Supper, I want to open up what is probably the most familiar text in all of Scripture. After introducing the sermon with opposing views about this text, I develop the sermon by carefully expounding the chief features of this passage. In the first place, I deal with the aspects of the text relating to God Himself such as the extent of His love, the nature of His love, the object of His love, and the action of His love. These are the foundational aspects of the text, and they reveal the attitude of God towards this world of mankind lost. In the second place, I deal with the positive response to this love by fallen sinners. This is really the applicatory aspect of the text, and it reveals the blessed results of the proper response. The conclusion is where I attempt to bring everything together. I point out another way of understanding the phrase “so loved,” and I emphasize the “result clause” of the text. This really solidifies the point of the passage with respect to those who have believed the gospel. May the Lord be pleased to bless His word to our hearts!
