INTRODUCTION: The victory at Jericho was sweet, but the tears of joy soon turned to tears of sorrow and regret. Trials and temptations most often come on the heels of victory when we let down our guard. The victory at Jericho was overshadowed by the loss against a much weaker foe at Ai.
CONCLUSION: Sin is a horrible disease. The lusts of one man led to a defeat in battle, the loss of innocent lives, and the discouragement of an entire nation. Surely the Lord was correct when He said, “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34).
P—POINT: The main theme of the lesson  Sin eventually catches up to those who commit it. In this passage, the sin was committed at the end of the victory in Jericho, but it caused defeat in the battle with Ai. Sin may not always bring swift judgment, but it eventually does brings judgment. S—STORY: A synopsis of the lesson  The victory at Jericho inflated the self-confidence of the Israelites. As spies were sent to search the land, they came back with a report that victory was certain. They forgot the most important element in the battle plan, and that was righteousness. Little did they know that Achan had sabotaged the entire nation by transgressing against the Lord. What should have been sure victory was an embarrassing defeat. In the end, Achan was executed and the wrath of God was subdued and turned from His people.
