Dearly beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ, we began last week to look at the life and reign of Hezekiah king of Judah. We ended last week on something of a cliff-hanger, as the Assyrian army was camped outside a Jerusalem that most certainly lacked the military strength to repel an assault. What happened next? Basically, what happened next was an invitation to surrender. What we’ll see in this text tonight is the ploys that the world uses to convince us that we’re better off trusting it than we are trusting God. Particularly when God is testing us, the world tries to persuade us that God is not trustworthy and that the world has everything we need. The Rabshakeh expertly presents these arguments, and indeed, they are arguments that our own hearts use on us all the time. What I hope to show you from this text is that the world’s arguments are plausible, but God is still trustworthy. In order to overcome the world, you’re going to have to trust Him.
