We will consider Christ's Atonement under these headings: I – Prerequisites for the work of atonement II – Aspects of the Atonement III – The Beneficiaries of the Atonement
A) Active Obedience: Certainly the Bible emphasizes more the death of Christ in our favor than His obedience, but we must not downplay the truth that He lived in perfect obedience
B) Passive Obedience This points to the sufferings of Christ through His life which were epitomized in His sacrifice at the cross.
1. He suffered all of His life.
2. He suffered at the cross a) Physically, including death on a cross b) Bearing our sins c) He suffered being forsaken by His Father and His friends d) He suffered the wrath of God
II-What are the different aspects of the Atonement? a) The Sacrifice or Expiation: because we are guilty and deserving death over our sins, Christ paid for that by the sacrifice of Himself in our place (Heb 9:26)
b) Propitiation: because we are under the wrath of God because of sin. By dying in our place, Christ received the wrath of God on the cross therefore, we are no longer the objects of wrath. (Rom 3:25; He 2:17; 1Jn 4:10)
c) Reconciliation: because we are enemies and separated from God because of sin. Christ reconciled us to God in His death and brings us back to fellowship with Him. (Rom 5:8-11; 2Cor 5:18-20)
d) Redemption: because we are slaves to sin and Satan. By paying the price of our rescue (the ransom), Christ redeemed us (purchased) from sin. (Heb 2:15; Col 1:13) 1. Redemption from the guilt of sin 2. Redemption from the condemnation of sin 3. Redemption from the power of sin 4. Redemption from the presence of sin
