1. The commendation of the eastern tribes Joshua commends the eastern tribes for following God and being faithful to Him. He then sends them towards the east to their assigned lands.
2. The construction of a new altar The eastern tribes build an altar by the Jordan.
3. The consternation of the western tribes The Israelites are concerned when they hear that the altar has been built and they prepare to go to war. Their consternation is well-placed. They are worried that the eastern tribes are turning away from God to apostasy.
4. The consideration of the new altar The Israelites ask why the eastern tribes have erected the altar and they are given an answer. The tribes say that the altar was built for God and was not to be used for burnt offerings.
5. The confirmation of the will of God The Israelites are content with the answer that they are given and there is unity and peace.
Application for us taken from the example of the tribes on both sides of the Jordan:
1. From the western tribes we must be rebuked as we see an example of their desire for purity in the worship of God.
2. From the eastern tribes we must be reminded by their example as they display a burden of pure unity in the people of God.
