Paul warns about false teaching in which marriage would be forbidden. Combined with the accompanying false teaching which forbids certain foods, it is hard to come any other conclusion except that this prophecy has found its fulfillment in the Roman Catholic Church. Early in church history, the notion that celibacy was a higher spiritual existence began to take root. Eventually, the monastic movement came into being. Later came the requirement that priests remain celibate, which was strongly reinforced at the Council of Trent. Is this just a mistaken but harmless teaching. Not according to Paul. It is a doctrine of demons. Those who teach it are false prophets. Those who listen to it fall away from the faith. This very weekend the Roman Catholic hierarchy is meeting in Rome to address the horrific sexual scandals plaguing the priesthood. Such things have occurred throughout the centuries in the Catholic Church. If you impose upon men a false law, which forbids marriage, then what can you expect? You can expect these men, most of whom likely do not have the gift of celibacy, to indulge their sexual desires secretly and illicitly.
