Intro. The most controversial passage of Matthew 24 - not the clearest text
Five Views: 1. Historicist - 'generation' is 'race' and speaks of the abiding of the Jews or the human race until the Second Coming 2. Errorist - Jesus predicts his return in first generation, and was mistaken (liberal view) 3. Unapocalyptic - 'all these things' refers exclusively of events leading up to the fall of Jerusalem, and leaves out all second coming references (especially 29-31) 4. Apocalyptic Hyperbole - all which precedes is detailing the fall of Jerusalem; Second Coming is addressed in 36 and following only; so the end, shortening of days, great tribulation, and the contents of 29-31, are describing Christ's conclusion of the Jewish state in hyperbolic language; everything revolves around a strong insistence that 'this generation' is the immediate audience 5. Apocalyptic Anticipation - the context has brought us forward to the time of Christ's coming (parousia), and Jesus addresses 'this generation' who are to see 'all these things' which precede and encompass the Second Coming.
