Today I will continue our expository study of the prophecy of Isaiah. Having introduced Isaiah to you in the previous sermon, I will now open up the first words of his ministry. He wastes no time getting right the heart of the problem, and through him the Lord brings His charges against His people. Against the background of my opening comments about the long suffering of God, I shall present the three charges leveled against Judah. First, there is the accusation of rebellion in the nation (vv. 2-9). Essentially, the Lord God is charging His own children with juvenile delinquency. Second, there is the accusation of hypocrisy in worship (vv. 10-20). Essentially, the Lord God had grown sick of their worship. Third, there is the accusation of injustice in their relationships (vv. 21-31). Essentially, the people behaved selfishly and corruptly. I then conclude with an observation as to why the nation had deteriorated in this manner, which is followed by an admonition of how this is prevalent danger in our lives must be avoided. My prayer is that God will be pleased to bless His word for our spiritual profit as we open up this book!
