Today I will continue our expository study of the prophecy of Isaiah. Following the three previous sermons in which we have considered the person and the role of the Old Testament prophet, I now want to introduce you to Isaiah. I will begin very generally by looking at the life and times of Isaiah. My goal here is to acquaint you with the man himself and the world in which he lived. Isaiah ministered in a changing world on the international scene. Closer to home, he ministered in tumultuous times in the history of Israel. The Northern Kingdom of Israel would cease to exist, and the Southern Kingdom was being threatened with the judgment of God as well. From there I will develop the call and commissioning of Isaiah, for this is what made him able to withstand the opposition against him. The call comes when he has a vision of the exalted and holy God of Israel. This deeply humbles him, but it is also what prepares him for the sacred task of speaking on behalf of God. Actually, the whole book is the outworking of his vision of the holiness and otherness of God. We must grasp this! My prayer is that God will be pleased to bless His holy word for the profit of His people as we get into this series!
