The Christian may be in this world, but should not be part of it. Indeed we belong to another kingdom, and the time Lot and his family spent in Sodom teach us many things about our attachment to, and attitude towards, the society around us.
In his choice of land and a place to live, Lot did not choose wisely. In many respects he was tormented by the worldliness of Sodom, so that in the Scripture it calls him "just Lot", and describes how that he was "vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked."
We have to be vigilant, to be always looking out, guarding our lives, lest we be ruined by those who hate God and His righteous ways. We have to be prepared to put the biblical case for things such as the value of marriage and family life. We have to be focused, being aware that we ought not to "love the world, nor the things that are in it." Here we "have no continuing city", and should not be reluctant christians, with one foot in the world and one foot out of it.
Do not be like Lot's wife, with a fascination for things, which as God's people we have left behind. The day will come therefore when we as God's people will be vindicated. We are looking to that day, remain firm therefore in your convictions, knowing that we belong to a different kingdom. |
