To drink or not to drink--that is the question for Christians. Whether alcoholic beverages are allowable for believers has been debated for a long time, especially in the modern church in America. While most Christians have very strong leanings one way or the other, it isn't very certain if most Christians have real Biblical and historical substance to back up their decision. When you take a look at Biblical and historical data available to anyone who is willing to do the "study to show themselves approved unto God," one thing becomes clear: we cannot equate Biblical wine with the wine of our day, both in substance and in usage. Another factor that plays into this issue is that English Bibles use only one word (wine) for 6 Hebrew words that signify different things, from fresh grapes to raisins, to fresh-pressed grape juice, to fermented wine, and even vinegar. It behooves us as followers of Jesus Christ to understand our topic as much as possible before making hard and fast decisions about something at the center of so much controversy in the Church.
