Paul's good report of the advancing Gospel reveals God's sovereign control over all the affairs of humanity. Far from impeding the Gospel, Paul's imprisonment actually served to advance the Gospel through the company of the Imperial guard. The Gospel had even reached into Nero's household. Paul's imprisonment also emboldened other preachers to proclaim the Gospel without fear. It's at this point that Paul's report takes and an unexpected turn. Not all of those emboldened to preach did so with pure motives. Out of selfish ambition, some were using the opportunity to try and add to Paul's affliction. The Apostle sets a good example as he nonetheless rejoices that the Gospel is preached.
