Although any of the Puritan catechisms might be justly included in this publication, none is so well-known as The Westminster Shorter Catechism. Completed in 1647, it has since been used to educate children and new believers on the basic doctrines of the Christian faith. The First Book of Discipline prescribed Sunday afternoon as a time to teach children their catechisms. Any child who could answer all 107 questions in one sitting was presented a Bible by his or her church (a practice still employed by the Free Church of Scotland). Parents of younger children, who might find this catechism too daunting, should instead consider The Mother’s Catechism.
