This part of Genesis is crucial to the Bible; it deals with sin. Chapter three is a key, pivotal chapter for all the rest of Scripture. Sin finds its roots in chapter three. We take this chapter and the rest of the Bible literally. It's an actual historical account. Without Adam's fall being an actual, literal event God's plan of salvation makes no sense!
The temptation by Satan starts out the chapter 3. The talking serpent wasn't strange to Eve. Satan follows a pattern of first questioning God's Word, He casts doubt on God's goodness. He then denies God's Word. The serpent (Satan) finally slanders God's character. He denies God's judgment. Why not to eat God doesn't say. But the command allows man to exercise his volition to obey/disobey God's will. Disobeying God brought shame and guilt upon Adam and Eve. Adam is afraid of God now. He blamed the God-given woman who then blamed the Serpent. Everyone's guilt was punished.
Adam and Eve received mercy when they were provided a covering and when stopped from eating from the Tree of Life by being banished from Eden.
