Ahab, although being a very ungodly man, was a very capable military leader so that under his reign Israel was a strong military force. When faced with a formidable threat from the north, the Lord provided him with instructions through an unnamed prophet, which he somewhat surprisingly heeded. However he mixed in with the counsel of the Lord from the godly prophets, the counsel of the ungodly prophets of the pagan gods. This mirrored well the mixed worship Israel practiced at the time. God again acted on behalf of His people, despite themselves, demonstrating His prowess over the pagan gods.
Ahab made what proved to be a disasterous alliance with Ben-hadad as he tried to establish a buffer betweeen Israel and the looming threat of Assyria. In forming the alliance, Ahab let go a man the Lord had devoted to destruction. It would cost Ahab his life for having failed to precisely carry out the instruction of the Lord.
After those events, Ahab pouts because he cannot purchase a vineyard. Jezebel steps in and asserts her mix of godly and ungodly conduct to secure the land for him by selectively applying the Law in bringing about the death of the godly vineyard owner. God intervened and it cost her, her life by means of a very ugly and crude demise as she literally 'went to the dogs.'
