Why would God tell the Israelites that they must sacrifice the first born male animals? God is reminding us that He is the owner of all things. 100% of our income comes from God and He instructs us to set 10% aside for Him as a remembrance. In Egypt, God took the firstborn and spared the rest of the families of Egypt. Jesus is the firstborn of all creation and it was God's intention to sacrifice Jesus so that we might enter into a covenant with Him. If we are not covered by the sacrifice that Jesus made then we will not be saved. From the beginning, God's plan was in place, that His only begotten Son would die for the sins of all. Jesus was willing to take our place so that God's wrath would not consume us. We all were dead in trespasses and sin and without the sacrifice God provided through Jesus on the cross, we would have been destroyed. We need to live a life of obedience that will cause people close to us to wonder why we do what we do. Then our job is to tell them about God saving us through Jesus Christ. God gave His people instructions even when they did not understand. God told His people that once a year they were to do a radical house cleaning and clean out all yeast in the houses and towns. This spring cleaning was a picture and reminder of what God did to bring salvation to us. Everything belongs to God and our elder Brother Jesus has saved us by dying in our place.
