In v. 4a, we read how the Suffering Servant takes our consequences of the curse. These are the earthly consequences of Adam's sin, our griefs and sorrows. He has born these for us. This was fulfilled not only in Jesus' death but also in His healing ministry. Because Jesus never sinned, He could do this for us. In v. 4b, the Suffering Servant takes the affliction that we deserve. The Innocent One would be stricken and die for us. Christ came for us, our griefs, our sorrows, but we esteemed Him as stricken and smitten by God. He did not take these things for Himself because He had no sin but was our substitute, and it is in Him that we trust. In Him our hope rests!
