To experience temptation is to suffer. This is especially the case when we must suffer for our faith. And suffer we must. It is normal. It is not pleasant. It was the occasion for the Hebrews to draw back into a culturally acceptable yet heaven-rejected expression of religious worship. There is a parallel here in the contemporary church movement where institutionalized worldliness is used as a means of church grow, and the stigma of a holy life is pretty well jettisoned. This "relieves suffering" in the worst way.
