In The Reformed Pastor, Richard Baxter makes a strong case for pastors to act as shepherds and not merely preachers. He did the difficult and time-consuming work of regularly visiting each family in his parish, to better determine the spiritual state and needs of each family member, and to guide parents on how to best cultivate their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). It is likely that the following twenty directions came from his many years’ experience in giving this counsel. In the end, Baxter’s deliberate visitation ministry produced abundantly fruitful results, and it is likely that these directions—if heeded—would have the same effect in our own households.
