Jesus is, in our sermon text, exemplifying what James says in chapter 3 of his book, “Count it all joy, my brethren, when you suffer tribulations, trials and difficulties knowing that God is using this to work on you, to make you perfect and complete.” It is not just a metaphor or a motto, James really means it. Count it ALL joy. It is a sign that God is at work in your life. Jesus is modeling that, embracing that and he is walking into discomfort, where he will be dishonored. In fact, ironically, from a Scripture point of view, the very truth of a situation being uncomfortable, being discomforting, could very easily be taken as evidence that this is the path Christ wants you to walk. Generally speaking, when we consider God’s will for our lives we take the exact opposite approach. God will send me where my gifts perfectly match. God will send me to do the good works that I enjoy doing. God will send me where I will be comfortable…says not one Biblical passage ever. But it is the way we think whereas here it seems that discomfort, hurt pain and suffering may very well be the marks that God lays out that this is the path we should walk.
