Fear has many faces. Sometimes our basis for it is very logical. Every child injured by touching something hot or sharp learns a rational fear based upon an experience. So also with the so-called “fight or flight reflex” generated by the sudden surge of adrenaline that accompanies loud noises and startling surprises.
Oddly, fear also can be somewhat irrational, in that it may not have a logical or experiential basis, yet nevertheless produces an overwhelming emotional response. We often suffer a powerful emotional fear in the contemplation of some unknown present or future circumstance.
Our compassionate and all-seeing God knows this very well, and the Psalmist reminds us of it: “As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear Him.
