We began to look at this passage last time but did not have time to delve into its most important point. We spent quite some time discussing the metaphor of the racetrack with the stands full of the heroes of faith from previous generations of Christians. We saw that we are on the track, running for the finish line which is death and graduation to heaven. And we saw the first glimmerings of the notion that this race is going to be difficult. It is the project of a lifetime, one that requires us to limit our participation in good activities and to curb our sins altogether. That prompts the question: How can we get the strength to run like this for decades? How can we have the energy to still be following Jesus in the year 2050, 2075, and beyond? The answer is right here in the text: We can and must draw that energy from Christ by looking at Him, by contemplating Him with our minds and all our senses. Only that steady contemplation of Jesus Christ will be enough to keep us from dropping out of the race.
