"It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts." This was Job's concern. Well, that was Satan's argument or taunt — do this and that to Job and he will curse you to your face (1:11; 2:5). Job's wife said curse God and die (2:9). I. Job's Concern (1:5) Job understood the native depravity of the human heart and realized how easily each of us could fall into sin. Once a person curses God in his heart, he throws off Holy Fear and disregards God's Word and sovereignty and will do as he pleases in defiance against God. It is the sin that will lead to all the other sins! We can easily do this and say in our hearts, "Who is the Lord?" (Prv. 30:9) or simply forget God (Dt. 8:12-14) when things go well. II. Satan's Contention (1:11; 2:5; cf. 2:9) FIRST ARGUMENT: he argues that the only reason Job is godly and faithful is because God has blessed him (vv. 9-11). Satan is convinced that once God removed everything from Job ("touch ALL that he has") – what malice he has against God's servant! — Job will curse God to His face!!! ERGO: Ask yourself this question, "Do I serve God only because he will bless my material life?" SECOND ARGUMENT (2:4-5). Rather than stuff, belongings, and wealth, Satan thinks if God touched our body with some affliction, then we will curse God. Conclusion: What we say about God and how we respond to him is important! Christ took upon Himself the curses due for our sins. B/c Jesus died for us, we are no longer separated from God & every difficulty that comes into us serves for our good. We have better light and a clearer hope than Job. We have Rom. 8:28 & the completed work of Christ.
