The reason Paul appears to be laboring the point about justification is to remove any possibility of misunderstanding (i.e., to remove wriggle room from those who would like to distort this teaching) and also to prove he wasn't introducing anything new. Scripture has only one basis for justification and that has been in place from the beginning. Paul shows this by looking at two massive OT characters and demonstrating how their testimony is right in line with his teaching on justification. The sermon touches on the fact that though Paul and James were addressing different problems, their their understanding about justification was identical.
