Today we want to think about the contrasting difference between the father's servant's response, with the response of the elder son to the Prodigal Son's return. The elder son had a most definite response to the feasting and merriment of the father and all of his servants. The father had said to his servants in verse 23 – Bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry. But when the elder son, who had been out in the field working, when he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. And so he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. 1. The Explanation of the father's and the servant's feasting was not received well by the elder son. 2. The joylessness of self-righteousness and legalism, and the joy of those who have found Christ . 3. Christ is the End of the Law for Righteousness to everyone who believes. This brings real joy.
