If I'm reading God's word correctly, those that are NOT intimately connected with a local family of believers, are NOT trustworthy when it comes to understanding the inexhaustible riches of Christ and the boundless depths of His love.
Notice what Paul revealed about his prayers... he said he was praying they would comprehend, (that is, take hold and seize), the truth about the surpassing limitlessness and boundless love of God. What would be the purpose of this? THAT they will overflow with the fullness of God. But the conditions of taking hold of this (comprehensiveness) is dependent upon their intimacy with the brethren (saints). It takes a faith community, seeking and searching and serving Jesus, together, to grab hold of the richness of His inexhaustible love. Therefore, that tells me that those who are not growing together, with others in their local faith community, are not growing in the depths of His unfathomable love.
And to take it further... notice how the chapter closes. Let's reverse it: Statements like "forever and ever" establishes this was NOT something that ONLY applied to those living then. It applies to all generations, including our generation. And it will be in every generation, by Jesus Christ, and through His church, by whom His immeasurable power is in and working through, for His glory.
