We have heard the name of Melchizedek mentioned several times in this book of Hebrews. In fact, the name appears more frequently in Hebrews than in all the rest of the Bible put together. You will find Melchizedek mentioned once in Genesis 14 and once in Psalm 110, and eight times in Hebrews. Who is this guy? The record is incredibly sparse. We will talk about everything there is to know of Melchizedek in just a moment. But what's more important to the Hebrew writer (and therefore to us) than the identity of Melchizedek is his importance as an example of an altogether different and superior order of priesthood. Obviously the Levitical priesthood is extremely important and key for understanding the worship of Israel. But Melchizedek, the first priest mentioned in the Bible, demonstrates that there can be priests of the true God beyond and outside the Levitical order. Jesus is a priest — not a Levitical priest, but a Melchizedekian priest. That, my friends, is an incredibly important point, for as the writer will go on to say, it opens up the possibility of superseding the Levitical priesthood with a perfect priesthood. Jesus is the perfect priest who perfectly repairs and maintains your relationship with God. The order of Melchizedek is a priesthood superior to the Levitical priesthood — and Jesus is the perfect priest-king in this order.
