Having expressed in clear yet succinct terms the meaning of the Gospel, as that revelation of God that has brought grace, mercy and peace to those lost in darkness and misery due to sin. Paul is expressing to Timothy that his own mission (Paul's) and Timothy's mission is to promote this true Gospel of Jesus Christ, who alone brings us grace, mercy and peace.
To ignore the revelation of God, from the law to the Gospel is dangerous indeed, and so Paul at the outset exhorts Timothy to be vigilant in confronting those "different doctrines" that come not from God and are true and bring men to a state of grace and life, but from the vain, foolish thoughts of men, who in their babbling threaten to bring men into a state of cursing and death. Confront these teachers, and confront their doctrine and silence their false witness.
The only doctrine that we should have confidence in is that which brings about holy love, which comes from a pure heart, a good conscience and a sincere faith. Avoid then those different doctrines that do not bring love and life, but rather cause one to swerve away from the chief aim that is love.
Paul is calling Timothy to promote that which brings life by preaching/teaching that which is true, and confronting that which is false, knowing that what is at stake is souls of men. He is calling Timothy to consider and judge by the fruit that the teaching brings - love and life, or self-righteousness and death.
