Right off the bat, in light of the centrality of the Gospel, and what it can do (transform) and what it brings (freedom from sin) Paul wishes for Timothy to be devoted to silencing those who would preach/teach a doctrine different from that of Christ and Him crucified, Christ for sinners, of whom Paul was chief, but because of the grace of God, was made alive through Christ Jesus. Paul's own life is the clear testimony that the grace of God must not be silenced, that the true gospel of Christ Jesus for sinners must not be departed from. Without it there is no salvation, without it there is no hope to escape from a a life where the law only condemns both in this life and the life to come. Liberty is at stake and that is why Paul repeats his exhortation found in v. 3-4 again in vs. 18-20. And not only this but to know, to name and to warn the saints not to follow false teachers and their false teaching, for if one follows those who pilot their lives into the rocks, they too like so many ships will themselves be lost upon the rocks.
