The believer's struggle against remaining sin is unique in 3 respects: 1) It is spiritual in nature, 2) It cannot be dealt with effectively using non-spiritual means, and 3) It is only temporary since God will ultimately deliver us from the presence of sin entirely. Therefore, the believer can experience joy, despite his struggles, by keeping in mind three realities: 1) God has set him apart by grace for salvation, 2) The Spirit's work and influence in him are stronger than the pull and the opposition of sin, and 3) it is possible to live in the new way of the Spirit. This timely message sets the stage for Paul's teaching on the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer in Romans, Chapter 8.
