It truly is amazing that God’s love has been bestowed upon us. Eternal life is a gift of the Father bestowed upon us because of the work of the Lord Jesus Christ His Son. John is here trying to arouse us spiritually to think about the greatness of this gift and what it is doing for us and what it is going to do for us who are fallen unworthy creatures in ourselves. It is a gift of the Father’s love that we should be called the children of God. What if he had not bestowed it, where should we be? We should be lost and undone forever! It is 2nd – A love that the world does not understand. And 3rd – It is a love which we remember in the Lord’s Supper.
