In this second hermeneutics class, we examine the importance of context in determining the meaning of any text of scripture. It is all too common to see people rip passages out of their surroundings and interpret them in ways that conflict with the sentences that precede and follow them, with the paragraphs they are in, with the book of the Bible they are in, and with many other passages of scripture. We will consider Philippians 4:13 and Matthew 7:1 as two examples of texts that are often taken out of context.
