Psalm 72 is a Royal Psalm dealing with the king and His role in the life of the people and their worship. It is a Messianic Psalm as well. The king plays a major role in Israel's life and in Israel's worship. In worship it was the king's job to oversee the writing of the Psalms. And he was to lead in them in singing of the Psalms. The king was to represent God to the people. He was to represent God's Justice and righteousness, and he was to represent God's Presence and His protection, and His lead and His rule. But he was also to be a shepherd and a servant of the people. He was never to lift his soul above the people. The blessing of God comes only through the king.
