Christians suffer in life with all of fallen man because of sin. And God does mercifully for his children and comforts them in their time of need. But Paul would have the saints of the Corinthian church to move beyond the common sufferings, to enter into the sphere of sufferings that are attached to witnessing Christ and His word before a dying world. He wanted them to know how God had showed mercy and supplied comfort to him during this kind of suffering. He knew by experience that as these sufferings increased, so also did the comfort. This is the place of service for which the saints receive reward.
