The apostle Paul sets forth in the text 1) apparently contradictory circumstances (v. 8) in which the true Christian commends his faith as authentic; and 2) "experimental" paradoxes (v. 8b-10) by which true believers demonstrate that that have not "received the grace of God in vain" (v. 1). The sermon seeks to show from the text that it is not in spite of these seeming contradictions that the Christian commends himself, but by the very nature of these experiences. Hence, the the paradoxes themnselves form the pattern of authentic Christian experience. The sermon focuses on Christ as the example of the expeerience Paul describes and draws out practical implications for our Christian life.
